HQ 16 Corps
Client Profile
One of the most prestigious corps in the Northern Command of the Indian Army, 16 Corps has six divisions and takes care of operations in the Jammu region, south of Pir Panjal. It guards the rugged and mountainous Line of Control, besides being involved in counter-infiltration and counter-terrorist operations. HQ 16 Corps also functions as the security advisor to the government in the Jammu region. The Indian Army wanted to implement a Network Solution integrated between Army HQ and its Commands to exchange voice and video data over a secured channel using wired and wireless communication equipments.

Key Challenges
No backbone connectivity was available between Northern Command HQ and its corps. All 20 locations were remote, isolated and spread over J&K. The solution had to be cost-effective, best in terms of quality and provide maximum uptime as application for users were critical. With the given situations, migration of voice/data services on MSS during night hours without affecting any of the existing army communications was one of the key challenges.

Solution offered
The proposed solution had different interfaces in a single box containing E1, STM 1, and V.35 Cards and was provided with redundant processors, power supply and cards to eliminate any point of failure. As a result, HQ 16 Corps could transport voice packets at the compression rate of 1:8 over TDM and the same would be optimized in WAN link.

Following activities were carried out to deliver the proposed solution:-
Procurement, installation and commissioning of the equipments.
Integration of LAN with the Army Intranet..
Installation of Nortel MSS 7480 multi service platforms at all locations with E1 MSA, MVPE and Ethernet cards.
Integration for Nortel MSS 7480 with the existing TDM Exchanges.

Results / Outcome

No single point of failure.
Network resiliency to re-route around failures with no downtime.
Convergence of voice, data, video and security service.
Mission-critical applications converging over MSS requirements for reliability & security.
Protects service revenue and provides peace of mind through equipment protection, quick and accurate fault detection, robust networking features and in-service software        upgrades.
Mesh connectivity has been provided to customer with better utilization of bandwidth.
Quality networking translates into lower operating costs.
